Remembering Alice Like

Born in Calloway County on November 22, 1913, Alice Like would have had her 95th birthday this month.  She grew up near Hazel as one of five girls and one boy born to Walter and Winnie Scarbrough.

Alice married her beloved husband, Cecil, on Christmas day, December 25, 1937, in the midst of the difficult years of the Great Depression.  This year they would have been married for seventy-one years.  Cecil tells of the day he spotted a beautiful girl wearing a yellow dress in church at Hazel.  He claims they were friends for seventy-six years.  From their marriage came one daughter, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Cecil says that as leaders for the Calloway County 4-H he and Alice had “lots of kids.”  Their daughter Janet spoke of the many hours her mother spent in the kitchen teaching girls to cook and do other things around the home. Alice and Cecil were honored by the Commonwealth of Kentucky for over fifty years of service with 4-H.

The Likes placed membership with the University Church in April, 1977.  Together they faithfully attended worship and became actively involved in serving the Lord.  Cecil commented on the days when they were involved in visiting those in the hospital, nursing home, shut-ins and others.  A few years ago Alice fell in their home and broke a hip and has been unable to walk since then.  For the past six years, Jean Wiggins has led in scheduling volunteers from the church to sit with Alice at the nursing home.

Although the psalmist said, “The length of our days is seventy years-- or eighty, if we have the strength” (Psalm 90:10), Alice lived an additional fifteen years, a long and full life.  Living through almost the entire 20th Century, she witnessed some of our nation’s most tragic and most triumphant moments in history: two world wars, the assassination of a president and the first man on the moon along with other events.

Alice Like passed from this life on Monday, October 27, at Spring Creek Health Care.  Our love and sympathy goes to her husband, Cecil, her daughter, Janet Dees, and all her family and dear friends.  We give thanks to our Heavenly Father for a long and good life.

Charley’s Comments

We had a nice crowd with several UCSC alumni in attendance this past Monday night at our weekly Bread and Blade.  Our thanks go to the UCSC Alumni Association for sponsoring the meal and to all the UCSC alumni who came to the devotional.  We look forward to doing it again next year.

We have about 25 students who will be helping this weekend at Celebration.  The students really enjoy being a part of Celebration and helping with all the behind the scenes stuff that goes on to make the weekend happen. It would certainly be a much more difficult weekend for those of us who put it together, if we didn’t have the help of so many UCSC students.

Mark your calendars for Monday, November 24.  That will be the night for our annual UCSC Thanksgiving Dinner.  The dinner will be held here at the church building at 6:00 p.m. A sign-up list is on the UCSC Ministry board next to my office in the church building for those that will be attending the dinner.  This dinner is open to anyone who wants to join us for the evening.  Please indicate on the sign-up list how many people will be in your party.  This is always a great evening with lots of delicious food, good conversation and fellowship.  Join us!

A menu for the Thanksgiving dinner will be on the library window. If you can help with preparing a dish that is listed, please be sure to write your name in the space provided. Thank you!

Youth and Family News

This weekend we will be at Celebration at Kentucky Dam Village.  This is one of the trips that the kids (and adults) look forward to all year!  It is always an uplifting experience!  We will leave from the building at 5 p.m. on Friday night. Be here at 4:45 p.m. to load the buses. We will return on Sunday morning around 11:30 a.m.

If your child is attending, here are some of the things that he/she needs to bring:

Make sure that your child has turned in the Permission/Behavior Contract.  They will not be allowed to attend without it!

Please pray for us this weekend!  Ask God to open our hearts and let the songs we sing and the messages we hear this weekend make us stronger and more committed Christians!

Dear University Church of Christ Family,

On behalf of myself and everyone at New Pathways I thank you for allowing us to use your facilities, for our fall benefit dinner.  Thank you also to everyone that decorated and cleaned up. The room was beautiful and that sentiment was echoed all night by everyone that attended. The dinner was a huge success and that is no small part due to your generous donation of time, contribution and prayers. Thank you! (amount raised was about $7,600.)

Sincerely,

Andrew Johnson
