Our New “Twelve Step” Ministry

A Statement from our Shepherds

For some time, we have recognized the need for a ministry that can help people overcome by addictions; but we lacked the experience/training needed to undertake this work.  Recently, Mr. David Self, who has led such ministries, offered to help us if we would provide a meeting place.  The elders accepted his offer.

This past Sunday morning David, who lives in the Nashville area, met with the adult Bible classes and described his ministry.  Beginning October 26, weekly meetings will begin on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. in the downstairs classroom/s #132-33.  All who want the help offered (or want to support someone who does) are invited to participate.  The approach used will be based on the AA twelve-step program, emphasizing important Biblical principles; and it will be applicable to a broad range of addictions.  We are excited about this ministry and encourage interested people to attend this class.

Clearly, as we begin this important work we are expecting that it will provide the needed help to people who are enslaved to addictions.  We are also expecting that all of us can benefit by embracing this opportunity to serve others and to love them as Jesus himself would.  As He said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

 Charley’s Comments

This Sunday is the last opportunity to sign up to participate in the UCSC canned goods collection for Needline.  At the time of this writing we only have a few people/families signed up to help us.  If you can, please sign your name and address on the list this Sunday morning either before or after our worship.  We plan to pick up the canned goods from those participating in this opportunity on Monday night between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m.  If you cannot be home during that time, feel free to leave your items on the doorstep where we can see them.  Or, you can bring your items to the church building on Sunday.  We’ll make sure to add them to the other items collected on Monday night.

On Monday night, November 3, the UCSC Alumni and Friends Association is sponsoring the meal for our Monday Bread and Blade devotional.   We are inviting all UCSC alumni and friends in the area to join us.  Dinner is served at 6:00 p.m. and our devotional follows at 7:00 p.m.  Andrew Jones, one of our UCSC residents, will lead the devotional that night.  Andrew is from Cuba, and he is the son of Jeff and Tana Jones.  Please be our guest.  If you can come and eat, please let us know so we can make adequate plans for our meal.   Thanks.

**It has been brought to our attention that Needline needs canned soups, especially.

Text Box: CHANGE IN SERVICE TIME

This week’s Sunday night service (10/26) will begin at 6:00 p.m. instead of our usual 5:00 p.m.

This change is for this week only and was made to help with scheduling Trunk or Treat.

Youth and Family News

Neewollah – Saturday evening, October 25, at 7:00 p.m. for the UniversitYouth at Walter and Patty Mehr’s home.  We will enjoy games, prizes, a bonfire, hot dogs, chili--and maybe a few surprises.  This is a costume party, so get dressed up and see if you can win the prize for “Best Costume” or “Most Original Costume.”  We also need a few people to help us with a certain “project” (wink, wink) that will keep the kids on their toes.  Any volunteers are welcome!  Let me know if you have questions or need directions to Walter and Patty’s!

Trunk or Treat – Sunday evening, October 26, will be our Trunk or Treat party at the building.  We will start upstairs at 6:00 p.m. with a service geared toward the children.  Around 6:30 p.m. we will head downstairs for snacks, face painting, coloring, activities and games.  Around 7:00 p.m. the kids can go outside to begin Trunk or Treating!  Invite all your friends to come and have a night of fun!

We need everyone to bring some type of snack food (chips, cookies, mini-sandwiches, etc.) and some type of drink (Kool Aid, Lemonade, Capri Sun, etc.).  Also, we need helpers to assist with games and activities.  You can contact me or Traci Green if you need more information or would like to help!  Around 100 kids have attended in years past, so if you (or your Life Group) are decorating a trunk, please be sure to have enough candy!

This is going to be a great weekend!  Please come and join us for some fun and fellowship!

Have a blessed week!                                                              --Roy
