NEW PATHWAYS FOR CHILREN

As a result of discussion with the Director of Tennessee Children’s Home in the late 1980s a need for a home in this area was recognized. New Pathways for Children was opened as West Kentucky Children’s Home in 1990. West Kentucky Children’s Home operated under the supervision of Tennessee Children’s Home until 1996, when the home was renamed New Pathways for Children. At that time, New Pathways became a “stand-alone” facility.

New Pathways is a Church of Christ sponsored residential treatment center for male and female youth ages 10-18. New Pathways serves youth in the custody of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Many of the children served are from the West Kentucky Area. These children face a variety of challenges ranging from  abuse and neglect to mental health issues to severe behavioral problems to basic family and environmental issues. New Pathways strives to provide the best environment and services possible to help the young people address whatever challenge lies before them. It is our goal to show these youth a better life and a better way to live. We do this through the scriptural teachings of the Bible and through sound clinical support services.

Our mission at New Pathways is to minister to the developmental needs (physical, social, emotional, and spiritual) of at-risk youth in a Christ-like atmosphere seeking to instill within them a sense of hope, competency, belonging, and responsibility.

One of our largest sources of financial help comes from the New Pathways Annual Benefit Dinner. This year the dinner will be hosted by University church. Plan to be with us on October 16 at 6:00 p.m. In addition to taking up donations, there will be a silent auction before and during dinner.  The speaker at the dinner will be Mr. Thomas Todd. Mr. Todd is a dynamic and passionate speaker, and he is also intimately familiar with New Pathways as he is a former member on the Board of Directors.

We have set a goal this year of raising more money at this dinner than we have done at all other special events this year. With your help and prayers we should be able to achieve and possibly, surpass this goal.

 Charley’s Comments

This weekend is Homecoming at MSU. Saturday morning from 7:00-9:30 we’ll have our annual Pancake Breakfast at the UCSC. This is sponsored by the UCSC Alumni and Friends Association. It is open to the public. Donations are accepted and will go to the general fund of the UCSC A/F.  Drop by and enjoy a good breakfast before going to watch the parade.

From 11:00-2:30 you are invited to the UCSC Alumni and Friends tent at Tent City.  This year we’ll be serving hot, tasty, baked potatoes. All money raised from the sale of baked potatoes goes into the UCSC general fund; so drop by and have 2 or 3 baked potatoes!

Then, on Sunday morning, the UCSC young men will be leading the worship services at University. Our speaker will be Gary Ford.  Gary is a new student at MSU this year. He is 23 years old and calls Albuquerque, New Mexico his home. Gary’s home congregation is the Netherwood Park Church of Christ. He began preaching at congregations across New Mexico at the age of 18. Since that time he has worked with churches in Texas, Oklahoma, and Illinois.  He has also done mission work in Bangkok, Thailand through the AIM (Adventures in Missions) program. Gary plans to transfer to Harding University next year and study in their Center for Advanced Ministry Training. His degree will be in Bible/Missions.

After his graduation from Harding, Gary has a strong desire to do mission work in Asia. This summer he plans to conduct a survey trip to Asia to look at prospective mission points and teams to work with once he finishes his education.  Gary says, “I love sharing God’s word, with both Christians and not-yet-Christians and I am honored to have the opportunity to preach here at University Church of Christ.”

Youth and Family News

The COOL Kids and Youth are scheduled to join the Saints Alive for a Mini-Golf tournament this Saturday at Sullivan's. Meet at the building at 4 p.m. We will go together to play miniature golf, then return to the building for a pizza party.  This sounds like it is going to be a lot of fun!  We need to get a count of those coming in order to order the pizza, if you have not signed the list on the library window, please give me a call or send me an e-mail to let me know that you plan to attend!

Next weekend, October 18th, we will have a Family Trip to Lambert's Cafe in Sikeston, MO.  This is for any and everyone who would like to go.  We will leave from the building at 10 a.m. and return sometime in the afternoon.  (My best guess would be around 3pm, but I don't know how the crowds will be or how much shopping at the mall some will want to do!)  There is a sign up sheet on the library window for those that plan to attend.

The weekend following that, October 25th, is our Neewollah party for the youth at the Mehr's beginning at 7 p.m. We are in need of adult helpers for this, if you can assist us please let me know.  This will be a FULL COSTUME PARTY, so please come dressed appropriately!

The next day, October 26th, will be our Trunk or Treat party at 6 p.m. on the lower level parking lot of the building.  I will have more info on this soon.

Have a blessed week!
