Singers Needed for A Cappella Program on November 23
[Thanks to Amanda for submitting the
following. Since we did not have our
July 4 program in 2008, this has been planned.
Let’s get excited and give our support.
--Richard]
Jason Youngblood, Seth Grogan and I have
the privilege of going with the 1st thru 5th graders to Fern Terrace once a month to sing for the
residents. The children bring a breath
of fresh air whenever they walk through the doors of the facility. You can see the residents’ faces light up
when the kids open their mouths and start singing with energy, innocence and
pure joy. The children sing standard “church” songs from the book. Sometimes they fumble the words of the
verses, but when they reach the choruses—watch out! “Cheer UP my brother, live
in the sunshine.” They also sing traditional Bible school songs such as “If
You’re Happy and You Know It,” or “Jesus Loves Me.” They sing praise songs—sometimes
in parts! Whatever they are singing,
they sing with all their hearts because they are having fun being together and
working to make the residents smile.
Now the adults of University church have
an opportunity to experience the joy of working together and making the
residents of Murray/Calloway County smile!
We are going to have a celebration of a cappella music on Sunday,
November 23, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
This program will have both congregational and special group singing
throughout the afternoon. As we have
done in the past, our children will sing; and special quartets such as “Holy
Ground” will sing. You know the Church
Ladies will be there in all their finery!
We also want a BIG mixed group of men and
women to sing some special songs. Most
of the songs will be “standards” from the books, but there will be two or three
that you may not know which will require some practice. And yes, we will sing
in 4-part, 6-part and sometimes 8-part harmony; but don’t let that frighten
you! Remember, you can do everything
through him who gives you strength (Phil. 4:13). You will also be provided a rehearsal CD and
plenty of opportunities to practice.
Our first rehearsal/meeting will be
Wednesday, September 24, at 8:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall downstairs. It will last 45 minutes. If you cannot come then, come on Sunday,
September 28, at 3:30 p.m. If you love/like/or
even tolerate singing, then come help us bring a smile to
Murray! We need you! COME CONNECT WITH YOUR INNER CHILD!

Charley’s Comments
This
weekend is the UCSC Fall Retreat at
Ocoee, TN. A group of around 30 or so
will be heading out Friday afternoon late and returning to Murray Sunday
afternoon around 4:00. Saturday will be
a busy day with the morning spent on a ropes course and the afternoon spent on
the Ocoee River doing some white water rafting.
Those not rafting will have several hours of free time to study,
etc. Saturday night we’ll have a bonfire
and devotional until late at night. Prayers
for our time spent on the road, the ropes, and the river will be
appreciated.
Saturday morning at the University Christian Student Center
the UCSC Alumni and Friends are sponsoring a yard sale. All proceeds from the sale will go into the
general account of the UCSC Alumni and Friends. The UCSC A/F is a big supporter of the UCSC
and the activities we sponsor throughout the year. In fact, they are providing the money for our
participation in the ropes course this weekend at our retreat. This generous offer will save the students
participating in this year’s retreat around $25.00 a person. We appreciate very much the support provided
by the UCSC Alumni and Friends. If you have an opportunity to do so, please
drop by the UCSC and support the Alumni and Friend’s Association yard
sale. And thanks to all those who
donated items for the sale. We
appreciate your support.

NEW MINISTRY
ANNOUNCED
In last
week’s bulletin we announced a new ministry that is being planned for the near
future. This ministry is intended to
address the needs of those who have struggled with various kinds of addictions
from alcohol and drugs to sex and pornography.
We announced the date of September 28, but scheduling difficulties mean
it is being postponed until October.
Please pray about this and watch for more information soon.
Eastern European Mission
Special Contribution
Sunday, September 28
Using poetic form, the prophet Isaiah often describes the
coming Kingdom of Messiah as a time when people from throughout the nations
will be drawn to Zion and the Lord. In
amazing ways, we are seeing this happening in the Eastern European nations
today. With the fall of the atheistic
Soviet Union, restrictions were lifted, and we now find people who have not
known the Lord are hungry for his word.
EEM has been working
in this part of the world for a long time, smuggling Bibles into these
lands. Now they have been asked with
government approval to make Bibles available to every student in the public
schools of Ukraine. We can be part of
the fulfillment of God’s prophecy by our financial support of the printing and
distribution of these Bibles. Special
envelopes will be available on September 28 for our gifts. Please pray about this and express your faith
in the Lord and what he is doing around our world today by helping with
whatever gift you can.
