SON LIGHT
UNIVERSITY CHURCH OF CHRIST
Vol. 34, No. 35
August 28, 2008
Murray, Kentucky
Wayne
McClure Williams
(1919-2008)
The passing
of Wayne Williams on June 12th of this year brought to close an eventful era in the
history of the University Church. He was
the last of the original elders and deacons still associated with the church,
and his membership in the church spanned its entire history from its founding
in 1953 to the time of his death. At his
funeral, held in our auditorium on June 16th, his son, Ernie,
delivered a stunning and beautifully worded tribute to the many facets of his
father’s life. Wayne lived eighty-nine
eventful years, the last fifty-five of which were intimately intertwined with
the founding, growth & development of this church. While no short article can begin to do
justice to such a life, a few random comments may touch on some of the
highlights.
Although not
specifically mentioned in his obituary or at his funeral, those who observed
him over the long haul were impressed by his sincere devotion to the women in
his life. Throughout the final years of
Lilly’s life as well as that of Lilly’s mother, Sylva Smith Atkins, and of
Wayne’s own mother, Nova McClure Williams, he was available without question
24-7 to attend to their needs.
The
University Christian Student Center on Olive Boulevard stands today as a
testament to the nine men, including Wayne Williams, who comprised the first
board of directors as the center was organized and financed in the late
1960s. Throughout those founding years,
Wayne played a pivotal role in the development of the UCSC; and today’s
students, most of whom have never heard of Wayne Williams, are the recipients
of his hard work in those difficult early years.
Even though
Wayne was active in a number of varied community organizations and efforts
throughout the years, it was well known by all who knew him that his first love
was the church at large and the University Church in particular. He was appointed one of the first deacons in
1953 and served in that capacity until 1959 at which time he was asked to serve
as an elder. Upon his retirement from
the eldership in 1995, he had served in that capacity longer than any other
elder in our history. In addition, he
regularly taught Bible classes throughout the entirety of the church’s
existence.
In summary, it can be said that Wayne M.
Williams did whatever he thought needed to be done to strengthen the cause of
the kingdom locally, nationally and globally. At his funeral service, the entire
congregation stood to sing Wayne’s favorite hymn – “Tis So Sweet To Trust In
Jesus.” The words of this hymn were the
message he wanted to leave with this world.

Charley’s Comments
After several weeks of almost non-stop activity, it will be nice to enjoy a little longer than normal weekend. Many students will also take advantage of the long weekend by heading home for Labor Day. The start of the fall semester is always an extremely busy time, but it’s also an enjoyable time as we meet new students and make new friends. To all those who’ve helped with food, pulled screaming kids on tubes, agreed to serve as host families, bought pizza, opened their homes, or helped us out in any way, on behalf of the UCSC students we offer you our heartfelt thanks. You made the start of the fall semester this year a memorable and enjoyable experience for all.
Our activity at the lake this past Sunday night was enhanced by having several boats available to accommodate those who wanted to go tubing. Our thanks to Matt Hale, Randy Dunn, Willie and Robin Maxwell, and Nathan Bazzell for letting us use their boats. You folks made it a very enjoyable evening.
Many of you missed out on the opportunity to “dunk a minister” at the UCSC this past Monday night. Richard, Roy, and I all three spent several minutes in very cold water to give all who wished to do so an opportunity to dunk us. Those who took us up on the offer will not soon be forgotten by the three of us.
Youth and Family News
This coming Saturday, August 30th, will be our Family Day at the Park
from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. We will have some fun games for the family, and we
will grill hot dogs together. Please join us! This is for kids of
all sizes and ages! Our pavilion is to the left of the swimming pool (if
you are facing the pool) and right across from Hole #1 on the Frisbee golf
course. Hope to see you there!
Celebration will be on November 7-9 this year at
Kentucky Dam Village. The speakers will be David Skidmore and David
Fraze. Chris Lindsey will be leading the worship and there will be a
special performance by Acappella.
Unique to this year, Brian Imbus, a hypnotist, will be part of the
program. That should be very interesting! The cost this year is $45.00
per person. This includes the lodging and meals with the exception of Saturday
at supper, which is a block of free time. We have set a sign-up deadline
of Sept. 1st; so if you haven't signed up you need to do so as soon
as possible!
Our trip to St. Louis last
weekend was fantastic! For four of our youth; this was the final trip as Note Takers:
Raegan Green, Skylar Hunter, James Holland, and Madeline Carter! They
have now become full fledged members of the youth group! I will have
pictures on the web site soon!
Have a great week!

Thank You
I would like to express my sincere appreciation for

measure. We are so glad that our kids can be part of such a caring and
thoughtful congregation. Thank you for everything.
