ALL-CHURCH

POTLUCK & FELLOWSHIP

Help Welcome MSU Students for a New School Year

Once again activity has picked up around Murray town.  Increased traffic, “Welcome MSU Students” signs, motels filled with parents, restaurants crowded: these are a few of the signs that the fall term is beginning in this university town.  But it is exciting to welcome new and returning students.

You are invited to help us welcome students to our assemblies and fellowship at University church by participation in our all-church fellowship dinner this Sunday.  Bring your favorite dishes, enough for your family and at least two more people.  Immediately after dismissal from our worship service, we will assemble downstairs to enjoy a meal, meet our students and share loving fellowship together.

Help Honor Paul & Virginia Randolph

We are also using this time to honor Paul and Virginia Randolph for his years of service as a shepherding-elder of the University Church family.  Nothing could be more appropriate than combing a time for welcoming students and honoring Paul and Virginia.  Throughout their lives, they have been deeply involved with university students.   They moved to Murray in 1995 after retirement from teaching at Pepperdine University in Los Angeles.  Murray State University was a part of their decision to move here.  Paul was chosen to serve as an elder in 1999, and he served until a couple of months ago.  During his years as an elder, Paul was very active in working with Charley and the UCSC ministry.  We will take time at the dinner this Sunday to pay tribute to Paul and Virginia for their years of faithful service.

Charley’s Comments

The Fall Semester at MSU is up and running.  We’ve had several activities since the residential colleges opened last Saturday, and they’ve all been well attended.  But the fun has just begun.  Several more events are planned for the next week or so.  This Friday night we’re playing games at the UCSC beginning at 7:00.  Sunday afternoon at 3:00, weather permitting, we’re going to the lake for an afternoon of tubing, knee boarding and other fun stuff.  We’ll eat around 6:30, have a devotional, and head back to Murray at about dark.  All college-aged young people are invited.

Monday night we are once again sponsoring our ice cream in a gutter event.  We’ll have pizza at 6:00, followed by the now famous ice cream in a gutter.  For those who are too squeamish to eat out of a gutter, we’ll let you have a sissy bowl.   We’re also bringing in a dunking booth.  I’m hoping to talk Danny, Richard and possibly Roy, into spending a few moments in the booth Monday night.  All proceeds from the dunking booth will go to the child we sponsor in Malawi.  Drop by and dunk a minister Monday evening!  After the pizza and ice cream have settled, Becca and Francie have put together a scavenger hunt for the students.  It should be a fun evening for all.

Our thanks to the Mehr’s for allowing us to come out last Sunday night for a pool party and cookout.  The students and adults who attended had a great time!  We’d also like to extend our thanks to the two Life Groups who provided the food.  It was great!

And finally, today (Thursday, August 21), is my 25th wedding anniversary.  Happy Anniversary Dana, it’s been a great ride so far.  You’re the best!

Youth and Family News

Angie and I are going this week-end to St. Louis with the Note Takers. We will check out the Arch, the zoo, the Science Center and other places of interest.  Lloyd Hasty will teach the high school/junior high class on Sunday morning.  Patti Mehr will be in charge of Bible Hour.

On Sunday evening, the UniversitYouth will conduct the evening Service.  Zack Eells will bring the devotional.  He has worked very hard on preparing this lesson. I hope you will come and listen to him!

Our Family Day in the Park is next Saturday, August 30th, at the main park.  We have reserved the Pavilion attached to the restrooms in the middle of the park. If you are standing in front of the swimming pool, our pavilion will be to your left.  We will be there from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We have some fun games planned for the whole family!  Please come and join us.  Angie and I will supply the hot dogs and buns if you will bring chips, cookies, and drinks!

Courtney Walker has started Medical School and could use our prayers and support.  Courtney was a member of the UniversitYouth as well as part of the UCSC while she was here.  She is a wonderful person who has a very bright future ahead of her.  If you would like to send her a card or a letter of encouragement, you can reach her at the following address:

Please pray for us this weekend as we travel!  Have a blessed week!

Blood Drive

The Blood Drive for University church will be on Wednesday, September 3, in the lower level of the building from 5:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. If you are able to give, please sign the list posted on the library window.

In Loving Sympathy

We offer our loving sympathy to Verona Grogan and her son, Ken, at the sudden passing of Bobby Grogan.  A long-time member of the University Church family, Bobby’s faithful attendance and quiet, but gracious service will be missed.  He was in Georgia driving a vehicle for Taylor Bus when he suffered a heart attack.  An ambulance returning from a call happened by and began treating him almost immediately and transported him to a hospital near Atlanta.  However, he never revived.  Visitation will be at J. H. Churchill Funeral Home on Friday beginning at 5:00 p.m.  The funeral will be on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m.  Bobby was 76 years old.

Annual Teachers Appreciation Dinner

All of those who have served as teachers and or assistant teachers from last September to the present are invited for lunch as guest of our elders.  A full-buffet luncheon will be served at Pagliais’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 7.  Teachers and their families are welcome.  We have planned a program of singing by a quartet that includes Todd Walker from the Glendale church and some guys from Graves County.  More details will be provided in the next few weeks.
