UNIVERSITY CHURCH OF CHRIST

Vol. 34, No. 32   August 7, 2008

Murray, Kentucky

This Wednesday

August 13 - 7:00 p.m.

Guest Speaker:

Chris Hunter

This next Wednesday we will conclude our Summer Series with Chris Hunter’s presentation entitled, “God Revealed Through Nature.”  In Romans 1: 20, Paul wrote, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”  The Bible often uses nature to illustrate qualities of God.  During this presentation, Chris will discuss which of God’s qualities are revealed in nature to help support our faith.

As a former member of the University Church family, Chris is known and loved by many.  In June of 2006, he presented two programs here entitled “The Wonders of Creation” that were very well received.  He examined how a person can be certain that God exists by looking at the wondrous creation.  Chris’ current presentation serves as a capstone to these previous programs.

Currently, Chris lives in Frankfort, Kentucky, were he teaches environmental education.  He previously worked as a naturalist at Land Between The Lakes.

I know we have all been encouraged to see the spiritual growth of Chris over the past few years.  We want to continue to encourage him and at the same time benefit not only from his special knowledge of nature, but now his understanding of God’s word and how it relates to the creation around us.  Invite a friend and be with us next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

The Listening Lab

A Special Learning Experience presented by

Sojourner Mission

We have seventeen individuals signed up for the Listening Lab as presented by Gary Thorsen, Tuesday through Saturday, August 19-23 (except for Wednesday).  This intensive, interactive program is being presented in Churches of Christ all across the country and has received enthusiastic response from participants.

On Sunday morning, August 17, all of our adult and teen classes are invited to join together in the auditorium to hear Gary Thorsen give an introduction to this special program.  Others may be interested in participating after that.

The Listening Lab was first developed by Dr. John Savage as a result of research on why some church members remain active and others become inactive.  Since that time, it has helped Christians enhance communication with fellow-Christians, spouses, children, co-workers, friends, etc.

The emphasis is upon “Lab.”  This is not a series of lectures.   Each participant will work with a learning partner and as part of a support group.  It does involve a major time commitment of two and a half hours each evening and eight hours on Saturday.  You are requested to sign up ahead of time.  However, Gary Thorsen says that few who have started this Lab ever drop out.  Adults and teens have participated and enjoyed the learning experience.

Leaflets with more information are available on the Information Tables.

Budget Shortfall

Many of us are feeling the current economic crunch.   What affects each of us individually affects us as a church.  Being fully aware of this, our elders are committed to careful stewardship of funds that are given.  They also want to encourage all of us to make every effort to practice good stewardship.  In times like this, we become more aware of our need for careful management, but we must also recognize that all we have comes from God and is only entrusted to us.  Please be in prayer that we may be able fulfill the mission he has for us both as individual Christians and as a church.  We must trust him and continue to give as he provides.

New Wednesday Bible Study

Beginning on Wednesday, August 20, we will have a new series of Bible studies on the grand prophecies of Isaiah.  The following teachers are already preparing for seventeen challenging lessons between August and December: Dan Davis, Bobby Martin, David Taylor and Richard Youngblood.  A ladies class and an independent Bible study class will also be available.

Teach a Children’s Bible Class?

We are currently re-organizing our Sunday and Wednesday Bible classes for children.  Beginning in September, we are asking teachers to help us fill our classes for the coming year by each taking a class for one quarter at a time.  If you have any interest in helping with our children, please phone Jan or Richard at the church office.  We hope to be in contact with many of you who have taught in the past about helping with this new plan.  Please consider helping with this very important ministry.
