Important UCSC Ministry Needs

Earlier this summer Paul Randolph retired as an elder of the University family after serving faithfully and honorably in that capacity for 8 years.  As a result of Paul’s retirement, the elders have recently made some adjustments in their various areas of responsibility.  David Taylor and Randy Dunn are now serving as co-elders over the college ministry.  As a result of these changes it was felt that now might be a good time to make some adjustments, changes, and additions to our college committee as well.  A list has been generated identifying specific areas of need within the college ministry in which new and additional help is needed from the University family.  The areas of need are as follows:

1.  Food

2.  Education

3.  Home-Away-From-Home

4.  Facility/Property Maintenance

5.  Women’s Mentoring

6.  Student Recruitment/Retention

7.  Worship

8.  International Contact/Development

9.  Ministry Transition

Each of these areas need multiple coordinators or leaders, plus numerous volunteers to help carry out the responsibilities of each area.  If you would like to know more about a specific area and how you might be able to help our college ministry better serve the needs of our college students, please see either David or Randy.

Ministry Opportunity

Spring Creek Health Care needs volunteers who can ride the bus with residents on visits to the hospital.  Some patients do not have family that can come be with them at these times.  Transportation is provided on the Murray-Callaway Transit with handicap access, but they need someone to ride along and then help open doors, etc. when they get to the hospital.  This is a wonderful opportunity for Christians to demonstrate the compassion of Jesus by serving others in need.  Little effort or expense is involved, only time. For more information call Richard or Joanna Thomas, Activities Director at Spring Creek (767-2158).

Special Childcare Need

Jacklyn Cecil is a Christian who has moved to Murray to enroll in MSU.  She is also a single mother with a one-year old boy named Michael.  Jacklyn is struggling to manage school, work and caring for Michael.  Financial assistance is available to pay for childcare, but currently she has to pay for both daycare center during the daytime and a sitter in the evenings while she works.  Financial assistance is available to go to only one childcare source, not two.  If you know of anyone interested in the job, please phone Richard as soon as you can.  Jacklyn is a friend of Andrew Jones and has attended some at University church.

Need a Ride to Nashville

Elnisha Jones needs a ride to the Nashville airport on Tuesday morning, July29, to meet her two children who are returning from New Orleans.  They arrive in Nashville at 9:00 a.m.  If you can help, please call Richard.

Youth and Family News

What an amazing couple of weeks we have had!!  WKYC Camp was wonderful (very hot and tiring), and VBS has been incredible! We have such wonderful people here that work and support our youth and their endeavors!

A Special Thanks goes out to Angie, Patty, Walter, Michael, Danny, Alex, Diedre, and Erica for finishing up the painting on the youth room!  It looks great!  Stop by and have a look if you haven't seen it!

Also “thank you” to all who helped with VBS.  Jerry and Traci, Jason and Mandy, Walter and Patty, Willie and Robin, Brian and Jennifer, Levi and Mindy, Chris and Whitni, Shea Cope and Maggie plus many others who gave time, effort and donations to help this week.  The youth who assisted as tour guides and helped in the classrooms did a super job.  If I missed anyone, it was inadvertent; but I want you to know I appreciate the work all of you did!!

Our Luau will be Saturday, August 2nd, at Walter and Patty's house at 5 p.m.  We will swim, play games and grill out.  Please join us!

I would like to have a meeting with all parents on August 15 at Ryan's Steakhouse in Murray at 7 p.m. I will be sending out letters. We will meet to discuss the upcoming year and what we can do to make it even better.  I need to get a count of those attending for the restaurant.  Please let me know if you are coming to this meeting. Contact me at: roydavidhawkins1@yahoo.com, or call me at 978-6755 or 759-8972.

We have accomplished quite a bit this summer, and I'm very proud of all the hard work that your children have done!

 Have a blessed week! --Roy

 Guest Speaker: Hollis Miller

Hollis Miller has a long association as a preacher and special friend to the University church family.  He served a pulpit minister for the College Church of Christ longer than anyone so far in the history of this church.  Upon reaching retirement years, Hollis and his wife, Jean, decided to return to their associations in Murray.  They now live on South 16th Street, and he is working part-time for the Kirksey church. This tall man with his gentle and thoughtful spirit has endeared himself to those who know him.

Hollis is speaking next Wednesday evening on the topic: “Keeping Faith through the Transitions of Life.”  Life consists of three major divisions: youth, middle age and old age.  Whether we are ready or not to move from one of these to another may depend on the preparation we have made.  Come prepared to consider some ways our faith can help us make these transitions more naturally.

Eastern European Mission Report

Long before the fall of communism in the former Soviet Union, EEM was active in smuggling Bibles into the Easter European countries where Christianity was against the law. Now, in Ukraine, government leaders have asked EEM to supply Bibles for their school children and to teach their teachers how to teach the Bible. At the 5:00 p.m. service on Sunday, August 3, representatives of EEM will be here to share this amazing story with us.  Mark your calendar and plan to be here if at all possible.
