Summer Series 2008

This Wednesday

July 9 - 7:00 p.m.

Guest Speaker:

John Dale

Few people have endeared themselves to an entire community as has John William Dale in Murray and Calloway County.  After serving with our sister congregation, the Glendale Road church, for thirty-five years, there are few people in this area that are better known than John Dale.  When John and I have met for lunch occasionally, I feel as though my reputation has been advanced by all the folks who stop to speak to us.  We thank the Lord for the way in which he has been able to use this good, servant-hearted brother.

John Dale also has a special love and appreciation for the University church.  He always makes every effort to make room to come when we invite him to visit with us.  He attends and encourages our programs, shares the joys of successes and weeps at our losses.  Those of us on the staff of University church have been invited to speak at Glendale Road, and we have shared an encouraging fellowship together.

In observation of our general theme of “Trusting & Serving Jesus,” John suggested his lesson on “Trust in the Lord” from Proverbs 3:5-6.  This text says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”  John plans to emphasize that we can and must place absolute trust in the Lord, trust that we must not place in anything else.

I have been invited to speak in a summer series at the Pennyrile church in Madisonville, KY, this Wednesday.  However, my heart will also be with you here at University church.  I hope you will be present, invite your friends to join you and be encouraged in faith by John’s message.

Charley’s Campus Comments

While Kentucky Lake is not the Caribbean, it can still be a good place to relax and spend some time with your family.  Our family was blessed to spend the week together last week at one of Kentucky Lake’s finer destinations, Hillman Ferry.  The weather wasn’t bad, it only rained a little one night, and it wasn’t blistering hot.  All in all it was a pretty good week and the company wasn’t bad either.  I hope you and your family will have an opportunity this summer to “get away” and spend a little time together, even if it’s no farther away than Kentucky Lake.

On Tuesday, July 8th, a group of us from the UCSC are going to Lambert’s.  If you’d like to tag along with us, just let me know this Sunday or sometime before we leave Tuesday.  We’ll be leaving from the UCSC parking lot at 5:00 Tuesday afternoon and returning sometime around 10:00.   You’ll probably need around $20.00 or so for your meal, maybe a little more if you get dessert.  And remember, they don’t accept credit cards at Lamberts.  They do, however, accept cash and a personal check.

We will continue to meet on Tuesday night’s throughout the month of July.  Our Tuesday night activities are open to all college and college-aged young people.  We typically meet at 6:30 for dinner and we follow that with a fun activity beginning around 8:00.  Anyone in this age range is welcome to join us.

Youth and Family News

What a fantastic week we have had!  We have been doing various "Community Service" projects, and it has been wonderful both to serve people and to watch the kids enjoy doing so!

There is a sign up sheet on the library window for Holiday World.  We will be going on Tuesday, July 8th.  Since we have more than 15 people the cost will be $26.95 per person.  I will need to have an approximate number to call them on Monday so that we can receive the discount.  We will leave at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday and be home around 10:00 p.m.

Don't forget, the young women's Bible Study on Thursday night!

Next Wednesday is the third day of our Community Service Project, and we have various activities planned for the day.  If your child would like to be involved, please meet us at the building at 8:30 a.m.

Don't forget this Sunday is your final opportunity to register for VBS!  The registration forms are on the library window.  VBS will be July 21-24 with a cook out on Friday, July 25th.  If your children would like a T-Shirt, you need to make sure that they are pre-registered.  Please don't forget!

 Have a blessed week.

Roy

To go along with the “Lord’s Army”, we would again like to have themed snacks for VBS this year. If you are willing to donate money, snacks can be purchased to go along with the “Lord’s Army” theme each evening. Please give your donations to Traci Green or Roy Hawkins. Your generous contributions provided fun snacks last year. We are hoping for another great VBS this year. Thank you!
