Vol. 34, No. 25   June 19, 2008                                                                                                                                                                                                           Murray, Kentucky

This Wednesday

June 25 - 7:00 p.m.

Guest Speaker:

Leon Sanderson

This week we will have the special privilege of hearing Dr. Leon Sanderson from Memphis, Tennessee.  He is the son of the song writer, L.O. Sanderson, who wrote “Be With Me Lord” among other songs.  Leon served as a preacher for congregations in his earlier years, but for the past 28 years he has used his considerable musical abilities as worship leader at the White Station Church of Christ.  His roles have also included overseeing life groups, coordinating the involvement ministry and leading senior adult ministry.

In 2007, Leon completed a Doctor of Ministry degree at Harding Graduate School in Memphis.  His dissertation explored the role grandparents play in the social and moral development of grandchildren.  Of his research, he stated: “I wanted to establish the importance of senior adult ministry generally but focus on how grandparents can pass on values to their grandchildren.”

We have asked Leon to discuss the role of seniors in the church.  He has titled his lesson, “Growing Older and Growing Useful.”  He will challenge us to help our older members not to feel put on the shelf.  Instead, we can encourage them to use their abilities, wisdom and experience in today’s ministry.

You will enjoy meeting and hearing Leon Sanderson.  He is a genuinely positive, friendly and encouraging brother.  He is hoping his wife, Marilyn, will be able to come also.  For several years, she has been director of elementary schools for Harding Academy of Memphis, a Christian school. We hope you will look forward to this special opportunity.

 Charley’s Campus Comments

I appreciate the following students who went to Cuba this past Sunday night: Zak, Alysha, Jonathan, Justin, Nathan, Kayla and Andrew.  Several others had to work or were out of town for the evening and could not go with us.  We’ll do this once more in July when a group goes to the Pottsville Church on Sunday morning, July 13.

A small but energetic group also continues to meet on Tuesday nights throughout the summer.  This past Tuesday night nine of us met for dinner at the UCSC and Wallyball at the Murray State Wellness Center.  Each Tuesday night we meet for dinner at 6:30 and afterwards we do something fun together.  All college or college aged young people are welcome to join us.

Some of you remember Jack and Francie Smith.  Both Jack and Francie were very active in the UCSC, as students, and Francie served for a while as an assistant in our ministry.  They’ve been living in Columbia, MO while Francie pursued her doctorate in Organizational Communication.  Earlier this summer Francie completed her doctorate. Within the last month or so both, she and Jack have secured jobs at Murray State.  They are moving back to Murray this weekend.  I know their families are thrilled to have them back in Murray.  Welcome home Jack and Francie!

Youth and Family News

Hello! I hope everyone is having a great week!!

It is time to register for VBS.  Our theme this year is "Lord's Army" and we have some pretty interesting things planned for the week.  VBS will be held July 21st through the 24th with a Family Cook Out on Friday, the 25th.  You can pick up your registration sheets on the library window.  Please make sure that you register in advance so that we can be certain to have enough t-shirts for everyone involved!!  Don't forget to invite your friends and neighbors to come with you.  Awards will be given to the kids who bring the most people!

A.W.O.L. (A Work of Love) is next week. We need as many teens to be involved as possible.  This activity is for the 7th grade (or if you are going in to the 7th grade) through 12th grade.  We will be going to the houses of some members and acquaintances of the University Church doing yard work and various other tasks.  Starting time is Monday, June 23rd at 8:00 a.m. We will be going through the afternoon each day. Lunch and cold drinks will be provided everyday.  If you know of someone who could use the help of the UniversitYouth please let me know ASAP so that I can add them to the list.

Please check your calendars and the web site www.universityouth.org for more upcoming events!  Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Roy

With Appreciation

University church of Christ,

As I remember the beautiful wedding May 24th (Barbara and Gene), it was at the end of the ceremony I was going out then I fell (at the back of the auditorium) and broke my ankle. Jerry and I want to say a big “Thanks” for those who showed concern, got a wheel chair and helped to get me to the car to go to the Emergency Room. This all was so efficiently taken care of.

Thanks to all!!Remember me in prayers, that I may walk as well as before this.

In Christian love,

Jerry and Marilla Steele

Thank you seems inadequate to show how much your support means.  But though the words are simple, we hope you know the gratitude and the special warmth they represent.

Sympathy . . .

We express our sympathy to the family of Wayne Williams who passed away at Murray-Calloway County Hospital last Thursday morning.  He was a great friend to many, former elder and one of the first members of the College Church of Christ. Our love goes out to his daughters, Evelyn Wallis and JoAnn Mathis and their families.  Evelyn and JoAnn are part of our church family.  Wayne’s son, Ernie, lives in Louisville with his family.  We plan to have a special tribute to Wayne in this bulletin sometime in the coming weeks.

THE LISTENING LAB

Tuesday — Saturday, August 19-23

If you have not done so, we encourage you to pick up one of the flyers about the Listening Lab.  They are located on the Information Tables.  A sign-up sheet is also on the library window.  Teenagers through adults can attend and enjoy this program.

Here are a couple of quotes from people who have attended this program:

“Don’t miss this exciting learning experience.  In addition to improving my listening skills, it has broadened my understanding of others and deepened my desire to serve in a more meaningful and Godlike manner.”  --Fran Watkins, LCSW, Marriage & Family Therapist.

“The Lab was fun, entertaining and very informative.  The examples of how to use the skills were excellent.  I loved the Round Robin Session!” –Teresa West, Fayetteville, Arkansas.
