THE LISTENING LAB

A Special Learning Experience presented by the

Sojourner Mission

Upon the recommendation of one of our members, the elders invited Gary Thorson from Hot Springs, Arkansas, to make an introductory presentation on the Listening Lab before a Sunday evening audience on April 20.  After hearing this overview, they decided to invite him to return in August to present the entire program.  All of our shepherds and the church staff who can, have committed themselves and their wives to participate in this program.  They also want to encourage as many as can to join them on Tuesday through Saturday, August 19-23, here at the church building.

The Listening Lab was first developed by Dr. John Savage as a result of his research on why some church members remain active and others become inactive.  Since that time, it has helped Christians enhance communication with spouses, children, co-workers, friends and everyone with whom we may have contact.

The emphasis is upon “Lab.”  This is not a series of lectures.  Each participant will work with a learning partner and will be part of a support group.  It does involve a major time commitment of two and a half hours Tuesday through Friday evenings and eight hours on Saturday.  We need a minimum of eighteen people and prefer a maximum of thirty, but more can be accommodated.  This is not a come when you want program.  You are requested to sign up ahead of time.  Gary Thorson said that, few who start the Lab ever drop out.  Adults and teens all across the country have participated and enjoyed the program.

Leaflets with more information are available on the Information Tables.  You will find a sign-up sheet on the library window.

Charley’s Campus Comments

I appreciate those who helped us with the clean-up day at the UCSC last Saturday.  I especially appreciate the work that Jim McCrory did in helping us finish up a few projects in the basement.  We were able to complete most of the items on our list of things to do.  Hopefully, the remaining items can be taken care of over the remainder of the summer break.

This Sunday morning several of our students will be visiting the Central Church of Christ in Benton.  The purpose of this visit is to represent the UCSC and put in a good word for the ministry.  Grant Mathis, one of our house residents, is a member at Central and he will have an opportunity to say a brief word or two about the UCSC during the morning assembly.  Also, a former UCSC house resident, Cody Doores, will be leading singing at Central this Sunday.  Those students who are going are asked to meet at the UCSC shortly before 8:30.  They will carpool together to the Central building.

We kicked off our summer schedule this week with a group of students going to eat at Nick’s and then gathering for several games of Wallyball at the MSU Wellness Center.  All college and college age people are invited to join us on Tuesday nights at the UCSC.  We meet at 6:30 for dinner and around 8:00 for an activity.  This coming Tuesday our activity for the evening will be bowling.

Weather permitting you may see a group of UCSC students picking up trash this Saturday morning.  In an effort to help raise money for our trip to Colorado this summer, some of the students participating will be picking up trash throughout the county at various times over the next 6-8 weeks.  With the cost of fuel skyrocketing, we’re trying to raise a few extra dollars to help cover some of that expense.  Honk if you see us.

Note of Thanks

Dear Friends

There are never enough words to thank all of you for your love and support. I knew when I fell that I would not have to go through the surgery and recovery alone. There is always a helping arm around my shoulder and a soft voice that tells  me to just do the best I can and everything will be OK. Within hours there were faces that I love coming in my door. The calls and cards gave each day an extra sparkle. The good things to eat have been enjoyed by all. I am doing great and hope to be back with you soon. My heart is there every time the doors open. God bless you all.

In Christian Love,

Ann Hays
