How $5.00 Built a University

The Story of George Pepperdine, Part 2

By Ernie Bailey

Always interested in Christian education and realizing the absence of any college affiliated with

Churches of Christ west of Abilene, Texas, George Pepperdine was convinced by Hugh M. Tiner (1908-1981) of the Los Angeles school system to establish such an institution in Los Angeles.  With the expert advice of Dr. Batsell Baxter, Sr. (1886-1956) of Nashville, Tennessee, a 34 acre site in south central Los Angeles was purchased for $150,000 and the school opened for business with 167 students in the fall of 1937.  One indication of the determination of this trio is the astonishing fact that within seven months of opening, the school was fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Colleges and Schools.

In 1944, Pepperdine became the first college among Churches of Christ to offer graduate programs and this is due largely to the fact that the founders were determined to assemble a faculty that would raise the school to a level beyond the typical Bible College of the day.

In 1968, Pepperdine University was given 138 choice acres on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu and in the early 1970s, the Malibu campus opened.  The old 1937 downtown Watts campus was finally sold in 1981.

Due in part to the school’s location in the high visibility area of Malibu, its proximity to the glitz and glitter of Hollywood and the southern California media-savvy environment, Pepperdine has built an international reputation that has become recognized far beyond the bounds of the Churches of Christ.

During the 1940s, the Foundation invested heavily in several business ventures, some of which failed to the tune of millions of dollars.  By 1951, both the Foundation and George Pepperdine himself were practically penniless due to the result of a long string of costly lawsuits brought by investors.

When George Pepperdine died in 1962, he was a relatively poor man.  Fortunately for us, while he had a fortune, he also had both the faith and foresight to invest a large chunk of it in a cause that he knew would outlive himself, but even Pepperdine could not have imagined the world-class university which it has become.  A copy of his biography, entitled Faith Is My Fortune, is in our church library.

Charley’s Campus Comments

This week brings to a close the ‘08 spring semester at MSU.  By the time you receive this bulletin most MSU students will have already left Murray for their summer vacation.  We wish all our students a wonderful summer break.  As we often do, we also have several students who are spending the summer in Murray, either working or attending summer classes.   The first summer term at MSU begins Tuesday, May 27.

Please mark your calendars for Saturday, May 31.  This will be the date for our big spring clean up at the UCSC.   We have several areas that need attention, so we hope many of you will be able to drop by and lend us a hand on the 31st.  In future articles I’ll be identifying some of the areas that will need attention, so please be watching and if you can help us out with any of our needs, we would greatly appreciate it.

Through the months of May, June, and July, a group of our students have made the commitment to visit some area Churches of Christ on Sunday nights for the purpose of meeting future MSU students and putting in a good word for the UCSC.   Our UCSC residents will be coordinating this activity.  Our residents for the summer and fall semester will be; Grant Mathis, Nathan Bazzell, Jonathan Lewis, and Andrew Jones.

Congratulations MSU Graduates
